The BOUNCE Approach®
for LAs & MATs

Consistent Framework

A consistent SEMH framework across every school in your portfolio

The challenge for every Local Authority SEMH lead and every MAT director of inclusion is not finding good provision. It is finding provision that works consistently across multiple schools – with different staff teams, different cultures, different levels of existing expertise, and different children.

Most SEMH frameworks work well in individual schools where a skilled practitioner drives implementation. They are harder to sustain across ten schools. Harder still across thirty. And almost impossible to evidence consistently at a portfolio level when every school is using different tools, different language, and different approaches to identifying and tracking need.

The BOUNCE Approach® is built for scale.

One framework. One shared language. One evidence infrastructure. Applicable across every school in your trust or authority – regardless of size, phase, or existing provision.

The Problem

The problem with inconsistency at scale

When children move between schools in your trust or authority, their SEMH needs travel with them. But the framework for understanding and supporting those needs often does not. A child who has been supported through a regulated, trauma-informed approach in one school arrives at another where staff have no shared understanding of what that means or how to continue it.

When staff move between schools, the knowledge they carry is personal rather than institutional. When a trained ELSA leaves, or a pastoral lead moves on, the provision they were holding often leaves with them.

When Ofsted inspects across your trust, inconsistency in SEMH provision is visible. Schools that share a framework and a shared language generate more coherent evidence. Schools that are each doing something different generate a fragmented picture.

The BOUNCE Approach® addresses all three of these problems – by giving every school in your portfolio a common developmental framework, a common assessment infrastructure, and a common language for understanding what children need.

The BOUNCE Approach®

What is it?

The BOUNCE Approach® is a neurodivergent-affirming, trauma-informed framework that helps adults understand what may be influencing a child’s behaviour, regulation, relationships, and sense of self.

It is not a behaviour management system. It does not prescribe specific programmes or require specific roles to deliver it. It is a developmental framework that sits underneath and strengthens whatever provision your schools already have in place – ELSA, Thrive, PSHE, pastoral, nurture, MHST – making all of it more coherent and more effective.

It does not replace your Educational Psychology service, your SEMH advisory team, or your existing frameworks. It provides the shared developmental lens that connects them.

Not: what programme should we commission for this school?

But: what framework should every adult in every school in our portfolio share – so that provision is consistent, evidence-informed, and genuinely effective for the children who need it most?

Regulation before reasoning. Connection before correction.

Six foundations. One framework.

B

Body and Nervous System

Before a child can access learning, their body needs to feel safe. When every adult across your portfolio understands nervous system regulation and what behaviour is communicating, the conditions for learning are created consistently – not only in the schools where a skilled individual happens to be working.

O

Openness to Trust and Attachment

The most powerful intervention in any school is a consistent, trusted adult relationship. This pillar gives staff across your portfolio the understanding to build those relationships deliberately – and to sustain them even as staff and children move between settings.

U

Understanding Sensory Differences

Sensory processing differences are significantly more common than is widely recognised – particularly among children with SEMH needs and neurodivergent profiles. This pillar ensures that sensory needs are identified and addressed as part of SEMH provision across all your settings, not only in schools that happen to have a specialist.

N

Navigating Emotions

Emotional literacy work depends on body-based awareness that many children do not yet have. This pillar ensures that emotional development is approached from the inside out – building the interoceptive foundation that makes emotional literacy programmes effective rather than assuming it is already in place.

C

Communication Differences

Many children with SEMH needs across your portfolio are neurodivergent – identified or not. This pillar gives staff a framework for understanding communication differences and adapting their approach accordingly, reducing the misidentification of neurodivergent behaviour as SEMH difficulty.

E

Esteem, Identity and Self

For neurodivergent children who have experienced years of deficit framing, identity is not a peripheral concern. This pillar ensures that the provision across your portfolio includes a strengths-based, neurodivergent-affirming approach to identity – one that holds even under the pressure of transition between schools and settings.

How BOUNCE Helps

Why Local Authorities and MATs find BOUNCE useful

It creates consistency across multiple settings – a shared framework, a shared language, and a shared understanding of what behaviour is communicating and what children need.

It strengthens existing provision rather than replacing it – sitting underneath ELSA, Thrive, PSHE, pastoral, and MHST to make all of it more coherent and more effective.

It builds staff capacity at scale – through the Learning Portal, every staff member across every school in your portfolio has access to over 50 CPD-certified courses, resources, and interventions, available at their own pace without requiring supply cover or full-day training events.

It generates consistent evidence across settings – through the Snapshots tool, the BOUNCE Assessment Tracker, and a suite of validated wellbeing measures that produce comparable data across your portfolio, making it possible to track SEMH provision and outcomes at trust or authority level.

It supports neurodivergent learners specifically – giving staff the lens to understand autistic children, those with ADHD, and those with sensory differences, reducing unnecessary SEMH referrals and improving outcomes for children whose difficulties are neurodevelopmental rather than purely emotional.

It generates the evidence base that Ofsted, commissioners, and trust or authority leadership need to see – documented, consistent, and linked to identified need and targeted provision.

Snapshots

Evidence at scale

One of the most significant challenges for Local Authorities and MATs commissioning SEMH provision is evidencing impact consistently across multiple schools. Different schools using different tools produce different data. Comparing outcomes across a portfolio is difficult when the baseline measures are inconsistent.

Snapshots provides a solution. A two-minute structured baseline that identifies whether a child is currently at risk of social and emotional escalation. A targeted support plan linked to identified need. A review cycle two weeks later. Repeated consistently across every school in your portfolio, Snapshots generates comparable, trackable data at setting, trust, and authority level.

It does not replace clinical assessment or Educational Psychology involvement. It provides the early identification and monitoring infrastructure that makes those specialist resources more targeted and more effective.

Consistently applied across your portfolio, Snapshots gives you a trust-wide or authority-wide picture of SEMH need, provision, and progress – one that holds up to scrutiny from Ofsted, commissioners, and your own governance structures.

The Learning Portal
