Drawing Feelings

A gentle, art-based approach to exploring and understanding emotions — using colour, drawing, guided imagery, and body awareness to help children express and process feelings in a safe, creative space.

The Drawing Feelings method gives children and young people a non-verbal route into emotional expression — using drawing to represent both primary feelings and their opposites. Each session begins with guided imagery and visualisation to establish a calm, secure space, before introducing emotion cards and wheels to expand emotional vocabulary and physical sensation cards to connect feelings with bodily experience.

Grounding exercises run throughout, keeping children connected to the present moment and supporting a balanced awareness of mind and body. A practical, accessible approach for anyone supporting children who struggle to find words for what they feel — no art background required.

Also included

Three bonus resources to deepen your practice.

💜 Wellbeing Snapshot Access

A structured snapshot to identify where a child may be struggling on the inside while appearing fine on the outside — so you can see beneath the surface and respond to what is actually there.

📈 Progress Overview Access

Track entry to exit progress and evidence what has changed across the review period — giving you a clear picture of impact over time.

🧠 Introduction to the BOUNCE Approach® Webinar

Understand the nervous system foundations behind regulation, emotional expression, and connection — so you can apply them with confidence in your sessions.

Objectives

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, you will be able to:

1

Understand the theoretical foundation of Drawing Feelings

Explain the principles underpinning the Drawing Feelings approach and understand why drawing as a medium has a meaningful impact on children’s emotional wellbeing and self-expression.

2

Implement core Drawing Feelings techniques

Explore how to facilitate non-verbal expression, supportive dialogue, and emotional processing within sessions — so children can access and work with their feelings through drawing in a safe, structured way.

3

Support children in setting future goals

Explore how to use the emotional energy of the present moment and the concept of future self to help children identify where they want to go — and begin to build a bridge toward it.

4

Foster a safe and supportive environment

Understand how to create the relational and physical conditions that build trust and rapport with children — so they feel safe enough to express what’s genuinely present for them.

5

Adapt sessions to meet the emotional needs of all children

Explore how to flex the Drawing Feelings approach for children with different emotional profiles, communication styles, and levels of readiness — so every child can access the work in a way that fits them.
