Emotional Literacy Sessions. Built brick by brick.

Six sessions where children and young people build, choose and point with bricks while they explore feelings, body signals, regulation, relationships and identity. The adult beside them has a lesson plan for every step.

  • Six sessions, in order
  • About 30 minutes each
  • A lesson plan with every session

Why bricks

Some feelings are easier to build than to explain.

Asking a child or young person how they feel can be a lot to ask, especially when their body is already busy. Bricks give them something to point at, choose and move, so the conversation can start without the right words.

The body comes first

Before a feeling has a name, the body is often already showing it. Every session starts by checking in with energy and breath, then looks at the body clues underneath.

Regulation first, expectations second.

More than one way to answer

The child can point, show, choose, use a word or say “not sure”. More than one answer is fine, and so is none. Passing is always fine.

More than one way.

Noticing, not staying green

The goal isn’t to stay in the Just Right Zone all the time. It’s to notice what is happening, and to know what helps them feel safe.

Every brick belongs.

The six sessions

Each session builds on the one before.

Work through them in order, from finding the Just Right Zone to building a Map of Me. Each one adds a step: notice, understand, try, personalise, connect, then bring it all together.

  1. My Window, a wall of coloured bricks labelled Angry, Wobbly, Excited, Calm and Faraway, with Calm chosen

    Session 1Notice

    The Just Right Zone

    Finding my starting point

Finding a starting point: the Just Right Zone, the body clues that go with it and three parts of the brain. Children build a brick window together and notice which brick feels like them today.

    Shown: My Window

  2. A Get Curious slide titled The Growth Zone, with brick characters in front of a brain

    Session 2Understand

    The Growth Zone

    Colours, brains and what helps

Linking colours, energy and body clues, and starting to experiment with what helps. Short animated slides open each session and invite the child to get curious.

    Shown: The Growth Zone slides

  3. The Regulation tool, with an orange brick labelled shaky, wobbly and worried, and deep breaths chosen to try

    Session 3Try

    My Regulation Toolkit

Noticing the clues and finding what helps

Spotting the clues for leaving the zone, meeting four kinds of tools and starting a toolkit. Where am I? Pick my tools. Try them out. Where am I now? Skipping a tool is always an option.

    Shown: Regulation

  4. My Body Scan, a brick figure beside cards such as Warm and Cold, Tight and Loose, and Heart and Breath

    Session 4Personalise

    Leaving the Just Right Zone

Listening to my body and my senses

Giving sensations a number, noticing sensory likes and dislikes, and finding tools that suit. Noticing nothing much is fine too.

    Shown: My Body Scan

  5. My Inner Team, asking what does this part look like, with brick characters to choose from such as a person, animal, robot and blob

    Session 5Connect

    My Parts and My People

Getting to know my parts, and who helps me

Getting to know different parts, what each one needs, and the safe people who help. Children choose what each part looks like, from a person or an animal to a robot or a blob.

    Shown: My Inner Team

  6. A brick figure sitting on the grass among strength bricks labelled Kindness, Courage, Listening and Being funny

    Session 6Bring together

    My Map of Me

Tricky thoughts, my map and celebrating what I’ve found

Rebuilding a tricky thought, making a Map of Me and celebrating strengths, such as kindness, courage, listening and being funny.

    Shown: celebrating strengths

Inside a session

One page for the child. Start to finish.

Each session has its own page with the slides and every tool in order. Each tool opens full screen, so you can work through it side by side.

  2. Start5 to 7 minutesA settling check-in. In Session 1, My Battery, then Breathe: follow the bricks round a shape together, breathing along.Let’s see how full your battery feels today. There’s no right amount.Breathe, where the child follows the bricks round a shape while breathing along
  3. ExploreAbout 30 minutesThe main activities, one after another. In Session 1, the Magic Tree, the slides, My Window, My Body Scan and The Scale.Which bricks feel like you right now? More than one is fine.
  4. Finish5 to 10 minutesBack to the first tool to notice again, then a calm close: stretch, breathe out slowly, shake hands gently. You don’t have to be somewhere different from when we started.

About 30 minutes or more. A session can be split across sittings, and each tool can also be used on its own.
