Expanding the Window of Tolerance Webinar

Learn how to recognise when children are becoming overwhelmed, understand what sits beneath their behaviour, and develop practical strategies that help expand their capacity for learning, relationships, and emotional wellbeing.

The Window of Tolerance – or as we prefer to call it, the Window of Capacity – is a concept developed by Dr Dan Siegel that describes the optimal zone where a person can manage stress, process information, and function effectively. For children, understanding their window of capacity can be a powerful tool in recognising, understanding, and regulating their emotions.

When children are within their window of capacity, they are more likely to feel calm, focused, connected, and able to cope with everyday challenges. When they move outside this window, they may become overwhelmed, anxious, reactive, or shut down completely. Understanding these responses helps adults support children with greater empathy and effectiveness.

This webinar explores how children can learn to recognise their own signs of stress and develop practical strategies to return to a place of balance. From simple regulation techniques to a deeper understanding of the nervous system, you’ll gain approaches that can be used immediately at home, in schools, and in therapeutic settings.

Objectives

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, you will be able to:

1

Review the Polyvagal Framework in relation to the Window of Tolerance

Understand how Polyvagal Theory maps onto the Window of Tolerance — and how the three nervous system states (ventral vagal, sympathetic, and dorsal vagal) relate to a child’s capacity to engage, learn, and connect.

2

Explore how the body gets activated out of its Window of Tolerance

Understand the internal, external, and relational triggers that push the nervous system beyond its window — and what hyperarousal and hypoarousal look and feel like in practice.

3

Understand how internal and external resources support return to the window

Explore how both internal resources (breath, body awareness, self-compassion) and external resources (environment, relationship, sensory support) can help the nervous system return to a state of safety and regulation.

4

Explore different types of resourcing tools

Discover a range of practical resourcing approaches — grounding, sensory, relational, and somatic — and understand how to match the right tool to the child’s nervous system state in any given moment.
