Explore the developmental roots of separation anxiety and how the concept of soft landings offers a gentle, practical approach for supporting children who find separation particularly difficult.


Separation anxiety is a typical part of child development — but for some children it persists beyond the expected phase, becomes more pronounced, or significantly affects their ability to access school or other settings. Understanding what drives that anxiety, and why it varies so much in intensity and duration between children, is the starting point for effective support.

This training introduces the concept of soft landings — a compassionate, structured approach to supporting children through moments of separation in a way that builds felt safety rather than reinforcing distress. Suitable for school staff, early years practitioners, family support workers, and anyone supporting children for whom separation is a consistent source of overwhelm.
