BOUNCE Approach®Play-BasedCPD CertifiedOn-DemandND-Affirming

Running a Play-Doh Feelings Session

A 50-minute training for school staff on how to run trauma-informed sessions using Play-Doh as a symbolic tool — giving children a non-verbal route to express and understand their emotions.

Some children don’t need more words — they need somewhere safe to put the feelings. The children who shut down, melt down, or disappear into themselves are often the ones traditional talking approaches can’t reach. Not because they don’t have feelings to share, but because the feelings are too big, too tangled, or too unsafe to say out loud. Giving them something to shape often does what asking “how are you feeling?” never can.

Grounded in Internal Family Systems, Polyvagal Theory, and neurodivergent-affirming practice, this training gives you the structure, scripts, and visual tools to run sessions confidently in 1:1 or small-group settings with children aged 5 to 18. No therapy qualification required.

Designed for teaching assistants, learning mentors, SEN staff, ELSAs, and pastoral leads — this approach is particularly effective for children who struggle to verbalise emotions, can’t access talking-based interventions, or need relational, non-verbal ways to process conflict or trauma.

Also included

Three bonus resources to deepen your practice.

💜 Wellbeing Snapshot Access

A structured snapshot to identify where a child may be struggling on the inside while appearing fine on the outside — so you can see beneath the surface and respond to what is actually there.

📈 Progress Overview Access

Track entry to exit progress and evidence what has changed across the review period — giving you a clear picture of impact over time.

🧠 Introduction to the BOUNCE Approach® Webinar

Understand the nervous system foundations behind regulation, emotional expression, and connection — so you can apply them with confidence in your sessions.

Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

Four outcomes you’ll see with the children who haven’t been able to access traditional talking approaches.

1

Children express what words can’t reach

Using symbolic play, children externalise feelings they can’t name or don’t feel safe to speak aloud. The pressure to “talk about it” lifts — and what surfaces through the clay is often closer to the truth than any verbal answer would have been.

2

Emotional parts become visible — and workable

Children learn to shape “a scared part” or “a protecting part” and give it a name. Parts language, drawn from Internal Family Systems, turns overwhelming feelings into something small enough to hold — and kind enough to listen to.

3

Nervous systems settle before, during, and after

Polyvagal-informed grounding, breathwork, and bilateral strategies are woven through every session — so children regulate first and explore second. Sessions end with the child calmer than they arrived, not more dysregulated.

4

Repair, restoration, and connection become possible

Play-Doh gives you a third object to work around — so restorative conversations and conflict repair stop feeling like interrogations. Children explore ruptures through symbolic modelling, and the conversation shifts from “what did you do” to “what was happening inside?”

Pack Information

What’s Included

Everything you need to run sessions from day one — scripts, prompts, mats, and visual scaffolding.

1

Session outline and introduction script

A ready-to-use script to introduce the approach with the child — so you know exactly what to say and how to begin from the very first session.

2

Laminated scene mats

Symbolic settings for parts to ‘play’ — giving children a contained, imaginative space to externalise and explore what’s happening inside.

3

Question prompts

Includes simplified and integration versions — so you can meet the child where they are and deepen the work as the sessions progress.

4

Window of Tolerance visual

A clear, child-friendly reference to help children and practitioners identify nervous system states and understand what’s happening in the body in any given moment.

5

BOUNCE Scale energy tracking tool

A simple tool for children to track their energy state — building the body literacy and self-awareness that underpins regulation.

6

Energy state and brain state visuals

3-part brain and nervous system illustrations to use directly with children — making the science accessible, visual, and easy to refer back to across sessions.

7

Meditation scripts for calming focus

Ready-to-read scripts to open or close sessions — supporting nervous system settling and helping children arrive in a regulated state before the work begins.

8

Visual scales for before-and-after session tracking

Simple rating tools to use at the start and end of each session — giving you a visible record of shift and helping children notice their own regulation in real time.
