A Parts Approach
Explore Internal Family Systems theory as a compassionate framework for understanding children’s behaviour — and learn creative, somatic, and play-based ways to make Parts Work accessible in practice.
When a child shuts down, lashes out, or seems unreachable — there’s a Part of them trying to protect something that hurts. Internal Family Systems (IFS) theory offers one of the most compassionate frameworks available for understanding why children behave the way they do. Rather than seeing difficult behaviour as a problem to fix, it invites curiosity — asking which Part is showing up, what it’s carrying, and what it needs.
At the heart of this model is the Self — a calm, wise inner presence that every child already has. This training helps you understand how to strengthen that Self, support children in befriending even their most reactive Parts, and use creative, somatic, and play-based approaches to make this work accessible to children who struggle to put feelings into words.
Designed for SENCOs, learning mentors, school counsellors, pastoral leads, teaching assistants, family support workers, and early help practitioners. No prior knowledge of IFS or Polyvagal Theory required — particularly effective when working with children experiencing emotionally-based school avoidance, anxiety, PDA profiles, or trauma.
Three bonus resources to deepen your practice.
A structured snapshot to identify where a child may be struggling on the inside while appearing fine on the outside — so you can see beneath the surface and respond to what is actually there.
Track entry to exit progress and evidence what has changed across the review period — giving you a clear picture of impact over time.
Understand the nervous system foundations behind regulation, emotional expression, and connection — so you can apply them with confidence in your sessions.
