The Tree of Life Intervention
A creative, narrative-based approach that uses the metaphor of a tree to help children tell their story, explore their strengths, and reflect on the people and experiences that shape their lives.
The Tree of Life (Ncube, 2006) is a Narrative Therapy approach that uses the metaphor of a tree to help children and young people explore their story in a creative, non-threatening way. Roots represent history, culture, and background. The trunk holds skills and abilities. Branches carry hopes and dreams, leaves the significant people in a child’s life, and fruit the things they have given and received. Storms represent life’s difficulties — and the woodland creatures that gather around the tree become the resources that help them weather those storms.
This training covers the theory and research behind the approach, and gives you the practical framework to run Tree of Life sessions confidently in 1:1 or small-group settings. Suitable for anyone working directly with children who would benefit from a strengths-based, creative route into self-understanding and emotional expression.
Three bonus resources to deepen your practice.
A structured snapshot to identify where a child may be struggling on the inside while appearing fine on the outside — so you can see beneath the surface and respond to what is actually there.
Track entry to exit progress and evidence what has changed across the review period — giving you a clear picture of impact over time.
Understand the nervous system foundations behind regulation, emotional expression, and connection — so you can apply them with confidence in your sessions.
