The Tree of Life Intervention

A creative, narrative-based approach that uses the metaphor of a tree to help children tell their story, explore their strengths, and reflect on the people and experiences that shape their lives.

The Tree of Life (Ncube, 2006) is a Narrative Therapy approach that uses the metaphor of a tree to help children and young people explore their story in a creative, non-threatening way. Roots represent history, culture, and background. The trunk holds skills and abilities. Branches carry hopes and dreams, leaves the significant people in a child’s life, and fruit the things they have given and received. Storms represent life’s difficulties — and the woodland creatures that gather around the tree become the resources that help them weather those storms.

This training covers the theory and research behind the approach, and gives you the practical framework to run Tree of Life sessions confidently in 1:1 or small-group settings. Suitable for anyone working directly with children who would benefit from a strengths-based, creative route into self-understanding and emotional expression.

Also included

Three bonus resources to deepen your practice.

💜 Wellbeing Snapshot Access

A structured snapshot to identify where a child may be struggling on the inside while appearing fine on the outside — so you can see beneath the surface and respond to what is actually there.

📈 Progress Overview Access

Track entry to exit progress and evidence what has changed across the review period — giving you a clear picture of impact over time.

🧠 Introduction to the BOUNCE Approach® Webinar

Understand the nervous system foundations behind regulation, emotional expression, and connection — so you can apply them with confidence in your sessions.

Objectives

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, you will be able to:

1

Understand the core principles of Tree of Life narrative therapy

Explain what Tree of Life is, where it comes from, and the narrative therapy principles that underpin it as a strengths-based approach to supporting children.

2

Explore the growing research base for this approach in schools

Review the evidence for how Tree of Life has been applied in school settings — and what the research tells us about its impact on children’s wellbeing, identity, and resilience.

3

Identify the symbolic meaning of each element of the tree

Understand what each part of the tree represents — roots, trunk, branches, leaves, fruit, and storms — and how each element opens a different pathway into a child’s story and sense of self.

4

Apply this intervention with children across a range of presenting needs

Explore how to use Tree of Life with children struggling with a sense of belonging, friendships, identifying strengths, transitions (including moving schools), and loss.

5

Plan and deliver a 1:1 Tree of Life programme

Understand how to structure and deliver Tree of Life as a 1:1 intervention over a six-week-plus period — including session flow, pacing, and how to hold the work safely with an individual child.

6

Deliver Tree of Life in small groups and enrichment formats

Explore how to adapt the approach for small group delivery over six weeks or more, or as a one-day enrichment activity — particularly for groups with shared difficulties such as low self-esteem.
