Beyond Behaviour: Introducing The BOUNCE Approach® Learning Journeys

Every adult who works in a school knows the child the system struggles to reach.

The one who melts down at the classroom door.

The one who goes quiet and far away when the room gets too loud.

The one whose behaviour gets labelled long before anyone asks what it is actually telling us.

For a long time, the response to those children has been to manage the behaviour.

Reward the good.

Sanction the difficult.

Redirect.

Contain.

And for a lot of children – particularly those experiencing overwhelm, sensory differences, neurodivergence, adversity, anxiety, or difficulties with emotional regulation – that approach does not just fail.

It quietly tells them that the problem is them.

💭 What if we started somewhere else?

The BOUNCE Approach® Learning Journeys begins from a different place.

It begins from one idea:

Behaviour is communication from the nervous system, not simply a choice.

When a child shuts down, lashes out, or refuses to engage, they are telling us, in the only language available to them in that moment, that something does not feel safe.

Our job is not to manage that.

It is to understand it.

And to help the child understand it too.

🌱 Regulation Before Reasoning

The BOUNCE Approach® Learning Journeysare built on a simple belief:

Regulation before reasoning. Safety before learning.

Children cannot reliably access emotional literacy, communication, relationships, or identity work when their nervous system is stuck in survival.

So, we start with the body.

And we build from there.

We are excited to share that the first phase of The BOUNCE Approach® Learning Journeys launches this September.

🖤 What are Learning Journeys?

The BOUNCE Approach® Learning Journeysis a whole-child developmental journey that helps children understand themselves from the inside out.

It is neuroscience-based, trauma-informed, and neurodivergent-affirming, and is delivered by trained BOUNCE Practitioners working within schools, alternative provision, therapeutic services, residential settings, and community organisations.

The Journey are delivered across an academic year, with thirty structured sessions organised around the six pillars of the BOUNCE Approach®.

💜 Esteem & Identity – building a strong, kind sense of who we are

The order matters.

Each pillar rests upon the one before it because that is how children actually develop.

Safety comes before relationships.

Relationships come before exploration.

A child has to feel safe in their body before they can make sense of their feelings and understand how they communicate before they can build a confident sense of who they are.

Most PSHE programmes begin with emotions.

The BOUNCE Approach® Learning Journeys begins with regulation.

What makes this different is that it is not simply a set of session plans.

It is a complete, connected pathway designed so that trained Practitioners can deliver it with confidence.

Every session contributes to a child’s growing understanding of themselves, creating a journey rather than a collection of disconnected activities.

Every session is built in two layers.

The Adult Layer is read first and provides the understanding, science, and practitioner stance.

The Child Layer is the experience itself – following a gentle, predictable structure that helps children feel safe enough to engage.

It doesn’t.

The BOUNCE Approach® Learning Journeys is designed to sit underneath and strengthen existing provision, not compete with it.
