Theory of Mind
Using The BOUNCE Approach®
What’s happening
- Theory of Mind (ToM) is the ability to understand that other people have their own thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and perspectives — and that these may be different from our own.
- Many children develop this gradually, but some neurodivergent children may need more time, support, or different approaches.
- This doesn’t mean something is “wrong” — it’s simply a different way of experiencing the world.
- Energy battery impact: Without support, social situations can feel confusing or draining, leading to withdrawal, overwhelm, or conflict.
The BOUNCE Approach®
🖤 B — Body and Nervous System (Inside Tool)
- Support regulation first so children feel safe enough to think about perspectives.
- Use sensory or movement breaks before and during social practice.
❤️ O — Openness to Connection and Attachment (In-Between Tool)
- Approach ToM work through curiosity and play, not correction.
- Emphasise double empathy: connection goes both ways — adults and peers adapt too.
🧡 U — Understanding Sensory Differences (Outside Tool)
- Recognise that sensory overwhelm can block perspective-taking.
- Adapt environments to reduce stressors so children can focus on social understanding.
💚 N — Navigating Emotions (Inside Tool)
- Link ToM activities to emotional awareness (“When you feel X, someone else might feel Y”).
- Use scripts, visuals, or story-based play to explore emotions safely.
💙 C — Connection to Self and Others (In-Between Tool)
- Practise role-play, comic strips, or shared stories to explore different viewpoints.
- Celebrate effort in perspective-taking, not just accuracy.
💜 E — Esteem and Identity (Inside Tool)
- Affirm that having a different perspective style is valid.
- Highlight strengths such as honesty, clarity, or unique ways of interpreting situations.
Adult Focus:
- ToM support isn’t about forcing children to “fit in” — it’s about helping them feel safe, confident, and respected.
- Teach peers and adults to adapt communication, not just the child.
- Focus on building connection, not conformity.
