This training is designed for education professionals looking to run a 6-week+ intervention to enhance Theory of Mind skills in pupils, particularly those with social difficulties.
Theory of Mind (ToM) is crucial for fostering empathy, effective communication, and successful social interactions.  The training aims to equip educators with the knowledge and tools necessary to help their students understand and navigate the social world more effectively.

By the end of the session, you will have a greater understanding of:

  • Understand Theory of Mind: Gain an overview of what ToM is and why it’s crucial for social development.
  • Recognise Challenges: Identify common challenges in students with ToM difficulties.
  • Intervention Strategies: Learn effective strategies for enhancing ToM in students.
  • Use of Visual Supports: Explore the use of visual supports, such as social stories and social scripts, for ToM development.
  • Promote Inclusivity: Explore double empathy and why it’s important to understand when running a social skills intervention with neurotypical and neurodivergent students.

Suitability of Intervention

This intervention is suitable for children that:

Attachment Needs

  • Find it hard to ask for help from adults – even if detrimental to their own needs
  • Are overly reliant on adults to help them with tasks
  • Can become disruptive in class to gain adult attention
  • Struggle to separate from trusted adults, triggering their anxiety or anger
  • Have a fear of abandonment and/or rejection
  • Find it difficult to trust themselves or others

Emotional Needs

  • Are unable to recognise when they are moving/activated up/down the BOUNCE Scale (e.g., calm to fizzy)
  • Struggle to co-regulate down the BOUNCE scale, even with a trusted adult
  • Have outbursts of anger, even at small events
  • Avoid, refuse, run off, and/or hide when feeling overwhelmed
  • Can become too overwhelmed to take on new learning/questions/demands
  • Please others, even if it causes them emotional distress (fawn)

Connection Needs

  • Find it hard to initiate conversations
  • Find it hard to take turns in conversations
  • Struggle to ask and answer questions in a conversation (active listening)
  • Have difficulty forming or maintaining close relationships
  • Struggle to work with others, as a team, to solve problems
  • Struggle to understand the emotions in others and adapt to their needs accordingly

Self-Esteem Needs

  • Don’t feel worthy of accepting love and nurture
  • Can become upset at small ‘tellings off’
  • Engage with self-destructive behaviours due to negative belief systems
  • Say hurtful things to themself such as “I’m stupid” or “everyone hates me”
  • Struggle to know where they belong in the community/world
  • Struggle to try new things due to fear of failure or the unknown
