Regulation Strategies

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ What emotional regulation strategies do we use in the Learning Portal?

Across the Learning Portal, we use DBT-informed strategies.

DBT stands for Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.
In simple terms, this means practical tools that help children cope with big feelings safely, in the moment.


๐Ÿ”„ What โ€œdialecticalโ€ means in practice

Dialectical means two things can be true at the same time:

  • ๐Ÿ˜ก A child can feel angry and still be a good person
  • ๐ŸŒฑ A child can be struggling and still want to do well
  • โœ‹ A part of a child can say โ€œnoโ€ and need support

This reduces shame and helps adults respond with understanding rather than control.


๐Ÿง  What we mean by โ€œbehaviourโ€

In DBT, behaviour is not about compliance
It simply refers to what the body and brain do when emotions are strong:

  • ๐Ÿ”Š shouting
  • ๐Ÿซฅ withdrawing
  • ๐ŸงŠ freezing
  • ๐Ÿƒ running
  • โœ‹ refusing
  • ๐Ÿ’ฅ melting down

We treat behaviour as communication, not defiance.


๐Ÿซ What DBT strategies look like in the Portal

The DBT-informed strategies we use focus on:

  • ๐Ÿซ calming the nervous system
  • ๐ŸชŸ widening the window of tolerance
  • โ›” reducing escalation
  • ๐Ÿ”„ supporting recovery after stress
  • ๐Ÿค keeping connection intact

These include body-based, sensory, grounding, pacing, and pause-based tools that work even when a child canโ€™t talk or think clearly.
