Window of Tolerance Bumper Pack

A complete, progression-based toolkit for nervous system work with children aged 5–16 — helping them understand, name, and build real strategies to return to their window of tolerance.

The Window of Tolerance is one of the most important concepts in trauma-informed practice. When a child is within their window, they can think, learn, connect, and regulate. When they are pushed outside it — into hyperarousal or hypoarousal — none of those things are fully available to them. The challenge isn’t just helping children understand this concept. It’s helping them feel it, name it, and find their way back.

This bundle brings together a structured 8-activity pack, a capacity visual resource, and four illustrated emotional state charts — all grounded in Polyvagal Theory and The BOUNCE Approach® — into a single, coherent toolkit that builds genuine nervous system literacy over time.

Designed for SENCOs, school counsellors, mental health support teams, educational psychologists, pastoral leads, and family support workers. Particularly well suited for children who are pre-verbal, neurodivergent, PDA-profile, or trauma-affected — and provides robust evidence of SEMH provision for SEN planning and EHCP reviews.

Also included

Three bonus resources to deepen your practice.

💜 Wellbeing Snapshot Access

A structured snapshot to identify where a child may be struggling on the inside while appearing fine on the outside — so you can see beneath the surface and respond to what is actually there.

📈 Progress Overview Access

Track entry to exit progress and evidence what has changed across the review period — giving you a clear picture of impact over time.

🧠 Introduction to the BOUNCE Approach® Webinar

Understand the nervous system foundations behind regulation, emotional expression, and connection — so you can apply them with confidence in your sessions.

Objectives

What This Bundle Helps You Achieve

Four clear aims — grounded in Polyvagal Theory and the BOUNCE Approach® — to support regulation-first, trauma-informed practice with children aged 5–16.

1

Build an accessible language for the nervous system

Give children a clear, concrete framework for understanding what is happening inside their brain and body — using visual formats, child-friendly language, and multiple illustration styles that can be matched to the individual child.

2

Identify individual triggers and body sensations

Support children to notice the specific sensory triggers, thoughts, and physical signals that push them outside their window — across all eight sensory systems — so that regulation becomes proactive rather than reactive.

3

Build a personalised regulation toolkit

Guide each child through discovering the body-based strategies, environmental adjustments, and thought-shift approaches that genuinely help their own nervous system return to safety — not a generic list, but a toolkit that belongs to them.

4

Evidence co-regulation and SEMH provision

Use the structured, progression-based activities and visual tools to evidence the quality and depth of your SEMH support — providing clear documentation for SEN planning, EHCP reviews, and multi-agency communication.

Pack Information

What’s Included

Three components designed to work together — from structured therapeutic activities through to flexible visual tools that suit every child and every setting.

1

Window of Tolerance Activity Pack

A structured, 8-activity pack taking children through a logical progression — from first introduction to the Window of Tolerance through to building their own personalised regulation toolkit. Activities cover nervous system states, energy levels, fight/flight/freeze/fawn responses, personal triggers across all eight sensory systems, body-based regulators, and strategies for shifting unhelpful thought patterns. Also includes adult information cards on Polyvagal Theory, nervous system chemistry, and the fawn response, plus a practitioner closing note on co-regulation, neurodivergence, and what good regulation support actually looks like. 70 pages, A4 PDF.

2

Window of Tolerance and Capacity Visual Resource

A concise, BOUNCE Approach® colour-coded visual tool mapping five nervous system states — from Optimal (I CAN) through Curiosity (I COULD) to three Activated states (I CAN’T). Uses brain and character visuals alongside the BOUNCE zone colours, available in multiple layout formats to suit different ages and settings. Ideal as a classroom display, therapy room reference, or session check-in tool. 7 pages, PDF.

3

Window of Tolerance Visual Chart — Emotional States

Four illustrated versions of the Window of Tolerance showing the same six states — Fight, Flight, Calm, Joyful, Fear, and Shutdown — through four different visual styles: abstract characters, cartoon monsters, fruit characters, and real animal photographs. Having four styles means you can match the resource to the child rather than expecting the child to adapt to a single image set. Particularly suited to neurodivergent children, younger children, and those who respond to nature-based visuals. 7 pages, PDF.
