The ‘How I Communicate’ Pack

A therapeutic card resource that helps children explore and celebrate the different ways they take in, process, and share communication — making their voice visible without shame or pressure.

Many children who are emotionally dysregulated struggle to explain their needs or feel chronically misunderstood. Using animal characters, “I” statements, and strengths-based language, these cards externalise communication styles so they can be seen, named, and celebrated — whether a child needs extra processing time, prefers showing rather than speaking, or communicates best when moving. The goal is not to fix anything. It is to create the relationship, language, and trust that allows a child’s communication to be genuinely seen and supported.

Grounded in Parts Work, Polyvagal Theory, and The BOUNCE Approach®, this resource supports emotional safety, co-regulation, and trust-building across a wide range of settings. Suitable for restorative conversations, 1:1 support, and family work. Designed for teaching assistants, ELSAs, therapists, pastoral teams, and families who want practical, relational, trauma-informed tools for children whose communication differences have too often been treated as deficits.

Objectives

What This Resource Helps Children Do

The How I Communicate Cards are designed to help children:

1

Recognise and name their own communication preferences

Build self-awareness around how they naturally communicate — giving children a language for their own style before anyone asks them to change it.

2

See different communication styles as strengths, not problems

Reframe the way children understand their own communication — moving from deficit to difference, and from shame to curiosity about how they connect with the world.

3

Safely show their needs to adults who may otherwise misread behaviour

Give children a low-demand, visual way to communicate what they need — reducing the risk of misinterpretation and helping adults respond to the need rather than the behaviour.

4

Understand that others have different communication styles

Begin to develop perspective-taking around communication — understanding that difference is not difficulty, and that no single style is more valid than another.

5

Take part in restorative conversations without blame or shame

Use the cards as a relational tool within restorative processes — helping children engage in repair and reflection in a way that feels safe and accessible rather than exposing or pressured.

6

Build trust by experiencing what it feels like to be understood

Create the repeated relational moments that build genuine trust — so children begin to experience adults as safe, curious, and responsive rather than corrective.
