Using The BOUNCE Approach®
What’s happening
- The gut and brain are directly connected through the gut–brain axis.
- When a child feels anxious, their gut often reacts: stomach aches, nausea, changes in appetite, or urgent toilet needs.
- Equally, when the gut is unsettled — from food sensitivities, microbiome imbalance, or stress — anxiety can increase.
- Energy battery impact: gut discomfort drains capacity, leaving children more vulnerable to overwhelm and dysregulation.
The BOUNCE Approach®
🖤 B — Body and Nervous System (Inside Tool)
- Teach children to notice body cues (butterflies, tight stomach, racing heart).
- Use breathing exercises and grounding to calm the vagus nerve and reduce gut reactivity.
❤️ O — Openness to Connection and Attachment (In-Between Tool)
- Validate physical symptoms: “I believe you when you say your tummy hurts.”
- Build trust by linking body and feelings together gently.
🧡 U — Understanding Sensory Differences (Outside Tool)
- Recognise that noise, bright lights, or demands can worsen both gut and anxiety symptoms.
- Adapt environments with quiet, predictable routines — especially around mealtimes or transitions.
💚 N — Navigating Emotions (Inside Tool)
- Help children connect physical sensations to emotions: “Your stomach feels fizzy — could that be worry?”
- Use parts language: “A part of you feels nervous, and your tummy is showing it.”
💙 C — Connection to Self and Others (In-Between Tool)
- Encourage children to talk about safe foods and routines that help their body feel calm.
- Share strategies as a family or class (hydration, breaks, gentle movement).
💜 E — Esteem and Identity (Inside Tool)
- Affirm: “Your body is clever — it tells us when you need support.”
- Reduce shame around tummy-based anxiety by normalising the gut–feeling link.
Adult Focus:
- Gut discomfort is real, even if medical checks don’t show a cause.
- Anxiety can be expressed through the body long before a child has the words.
- Patterns matter — notice what foods, routines, or stressors increase gut–anxiety cycles.
