Using The BOUNCE Approach®
What’s happening
- Spoon Theory is a simple way to talk about energy and regulation, especially for neurodivergent children.
- Each “spoon” represents a unit of energy — physical, emotional, or mental.
- Tasks like getting dressed, concentrating, managing noise, or navigating friendships all use up spoons.
- Some children begin the day with fewer spoons due to anxiety, fatigue, or sensory overwhelm.
- Energy battery impact: when the spoons run out, children move outside their Window of Tolerance — into dysregulation.
The BOUNCE Approach®
🖤 B — Body and Nervous System (Inside Tool)
- Teach children to notice how their body feels as spoons run low (tired, fidgety, tense).
- Use pacing and recovery breaks to protect the nervous system.
❤️ O — Openness to Connection and Attachment (In-Between Tool)
- Use shared spoon language across adults and children to build mutual understanding.
- Model your own “spoon check-ins” to show it’s safe to talk about energy needs.
🧡 U — Understanding Sensory Differences (Outside Tool)
- Recognise that noise, light, or transitions use up spoons faster.
- Create spoon-friendly spaces (quiet corners, sensory nooks) for children to recharge.
💚 N — Navigating Emotions (Inside Tool)
- Use spoon levels to explain why emotions feel bigger when energy is low.
- Offer choice: “Do you want to use a spoon for this now, or save it for later?”
💙 C — Connection to Self and Others (In-Between Tool)
- Encourage children to plan spoon budgets — balancing high-energy activities with rest.
- Celebrate when they ask for help or set limits.
💜 E — Esteem and Identity (Inside Tool)
- Affirm: “Knowing your spoon level shows strength and self-awareness.”
- Highlight that different children have different starting spoons — and that’s okay.
Adult Focus:
- Spoon Theory shifts the question from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What does your body need right now?”
- Build spoon-aware routines at home and in classrooms.
- Protect against burnout by prioritising pacing, not pushing through.
