Metaphorical Stories Resource Pack
A collection of carefully crafted metaphorical stories — with discussion questions — that help children explore anger, anxiety, self-worth, friendship, and resilience in a safe, engaging, and shame-free way.
For many children, understanding and managing emotions can be overwhelming — leading to frustration, isolation, or behaviour that communicates what words cannot. Metaphorical stories offer a unique way in: reflecting a child’s own experiences through the journeys of others, creating just enough distance for feelings to be explored safely and without pressure.
This pack contains stories across six key emotional areas — anger and rage, sadness, kindness and empathy, friendship difficulties, anxiety and fear, resilience and determination, and self-worth — each accompanied by discussion questions to open meaningful conversations at the child’s own pace. Twenty-five stories in total, covering everything from perfectionism and fear of mistakes to parental separation, bullying, and building genuine self-worth.
Ideal for anyone supporting children who struggle to communicate their emotions — including teaching assistants, school counsellors, ELSAs, therapists, pastoral leads, and families. A creative, accessible bridge between feelings and understanding, usable in 1:1 sessions, small groups, or at home.
Three bonus resources to deepen your practice.
A structured snapshot to identify where a child may be struggling on the inside while appearing fine on the outside — so you can see beneath the surface and respond to what is actually there.
Track entry to exit progress and evidence what has changed across the review period — giving you a clear picture of impact over time.
Understand the nervous system foundations behind regulation, emotional expression, and connection — so you can apply them with confidence in your sessions.
