BOUNCE Approach®
Practitioner Programme
Become a BOUNCE® Practitioner
Stop managing behaviour. Start reading it.
Behaviour management assumes choice. It assumes control. The children taking up most of your week cannot access any of that in the moment you need them to – because their behaviour is not a choice. It is a nervous system under strain, communicating in the only language it has.
The BOUNCE Approach® Practitioner Programme is how you learn to read what every child is communicating – and how you build the understanding, the tools, and the confidence to do something about it. Not just with one child. With every child you will ever work with from this point forward.
The BOUNCE Approach®
The BOUNCE Approach® isn't a set of strategies. It's a structured way of seeing.
The BOUNCE Approach® is not a set of strategies. It is a structured way of seeing.
Six interconnected foundations – nervous system, attachment, sensory, emotions, communication, and self – that build from the ground up. Each layer supports the next. When one area becomes overwhelmed or unsupported, children communicate it through behaviour, shutdown, avoidance, or dysregulation. When those foundations are understood and strengthened in sequence, children feel safer, connect more easily, regulate more effectively, and become more able to engage, learn, and thrive.
The BOUNCE Approach® helps practitioners recognise where support is needed most – and what needs to come first. Because emotional wellbeing develops from the bottom up, through safety, connection, and regulation.
Grounded in polyvagal-informed practice, attachment theory, sensory and interoceptive awareness, trauma-informed neurodevelopment, and neurodivergent-affirming practice – and built to be used, not just understood.
Six foundations. One framework.
Body and Nervous System
You will learn why every intervention starts with the body – how to read nervous system states, recognise when a child is outside their window of tolerance, and understand why your own regulated presence is always the most powerful tool in the room.
Openness to Trust and Attachment
You will understand how trust is built – and rebuilt – through repeated, attuned experience. You will learn how to become a safe person for a child who has learned that adults cannot be trusted, and why rupture and repair matters more than getting it right every time.
Understanding Sensory Differences
You will learn to recognise when what looks like emotional difficulty is actually an unmet sensory need – and how to change the environment, not the child. This is the pillar practitioners tell us changes their practice fastest.
Navigating Emotions
You will understand why emotions begin in the body, not the mind – and how to help a child notice the signal before they can name the feeling. You will learn to work with every part of a child’s inner world, including the parts that have never felt safe enough to show up before.
Communication Differences
You will learn to hear what every child is already telling you – through behaviour, body language, silence, and speech. You will leave with practical ways to meet each child in their own communicative world, rather than expecting them to translate into yours.
Esteem, Identity and Self
You will learn how to help a child build durable confidence – not through praise or positivity, but through an honest, compassionate understanding of who they are. This is where your work as a practitioner leaves its longest-lasting mark.
From Understanding to Action
Knowing the six pillars is one thing. Knowing where to start with this child is another.
Every child’s profile across the six foundations is different. One child’s behaviour is driven by sensory overload. Another’s by a nervous system stuck in fight or flight. Another’s by a relationship that does not yet feel safe enough to risk. The same behaviour can have completely different roots – and the support that works for one child can make things worse for another.
This is not a framework you apply the same way to every child. It is a framework that helps you read each child individually – and know exactly where to begin.
That is what BOUNCE Snapshots are built for. In around two minutes, a Snapshot maps a child across the six pillars, shows you which foundations need attention first, and generates an instant support plan – so you are never guessing where to start, and never applying the wrong support to the right problem. Here is what that looks like in practice.

What was happening before the Snapshot
Physical and verbal violence, staff who didn’t know how to help.

What Changed
Changes introduced following the Snapshot
Moved to 2:1 support
Support increased from 1:1 to 2:1, giving the young person consistent, regulated adult presence.
Changed the environment
Sessions moved to an open space with minimal space restrictions and very few peers or members of the public present, as proximity to others was a known trigger.
Reduced communication demand
Communication kept to short sentences, with the adult sometimes looking away or turning away to reduce the demand of direct interaction.
Outcome
Re-run after two weeks, the overall indicator moved from At Risk ➝ Potential Risk
Practitioner Reflection
“It gave clarity and practical suggestions right at the start of working with this young person, and helped me understand his needs. It supported us to look at environmental need as well as emotional need, and gave the whole team — including outdoor learning and my own team — a shared benchmark to work from. We can use Snapshots to feed into individual development plans and EHCP funding, and it highlights where more training or a knowledge refresh is needed to support both the team and the young person.”
Details have been generalised to protect identity. Snapshots provide a point-in-time summary and should be used alongside professional judgement. They do not replace safeguarding processes.

“Really useful and I’m looking forward to introducing new practice based on this within our school for children with severe and complex needs.”
“This is a brilliant course. It has helped me so much with my job as an INA, but also as a parent and an autistic myself. There are many more courses I am going to do to help reinforce this and install what I have learnt here. Highly recommend this course!”
“This course is amazing. A plethora of knowledge. Thank you for such a wonderful work.”
