A Somatic Toolbox
A resource pack and video tutorial packed with simple, body-based strategies to help children return to their window of tolerance — whether they are overwhelmed, shut down, or anywhere in between.
Somatic tools work because they meet the nervous system where it is — in the body, before words or reasoning are available. Rooted in Polyvagal Theory and trauma-informed practice, this toolbox offers child-friendly exercises using movement, breath, sound, and visualisation that support regulation in the moment, for children in both hyper-aroused states (anxiety, anger, overwhelm) and hypo-aroused states (shutdown, freeze, disconnection).
Alongside the practical tools, you’ll explore how to recognise the signs of each arousal state, use validating language and reflective questioning to help children feel seen and safe, and apply real-world strategies through case studies — including LEGO, self-touch, drumming, and movement. Suitable for teaching assistants, therapists, pastoral leads, and anyone supporting children who need body-first routes back to calm.
Three bonus resources to deepen your practice.
A structured snapshot to look beneath behaviour and identify where the regulatory barrier sits — so you can respond to what is actually happening in the nervous system.
Track entry to exit progress and evidence what has changed across the review period — giving you a clear picture of impact over time.
Understand the nervous system foundations behind regulation, emotional expression, and connection — so you can apply them with confidence in your sessions.
