Exploring the Principles of NVR in the Home
A practical introduction to Non-Violent Resistance — a respectful, structured approach for managing high-conflict behaviour through presence, persistence, and connection rather than control.
Non-Violent Resistance is built on a simple but powerful shift — from trying to control a child’s behaviour to focusing on the adult’s own presence, calm, and consistency. For families navigating high-conflict situations with emotionally dysregulated or neurodivergent children, this approach offers a structured, respectful framework for setting boundaries, modelling calm, and rebuilding respectful communication without escalation.
This training introduces the core principles of NVR and how they translate into everyday family life, exploring connections with mindfulness and NLP approaches and how to assess whether this programme is the right fit. Adaptations for neurodivergent children and teens are included throughout. Suitable for parents, carers, foster carers, and professionals supporting families where conflict and dysregulation are a regular part of home life.
Objectives
Learning Objectives
By the end of this training, you will be able to:
1
Understand the principles of Non-Violent Resistance
Explain the core principles of NVR — what it is, where it comes from, and how it differs from traditional approaches to parenting and behaviour support by focusing on the adult’s presence rather than the child’s compliance.
2
Explore how NVR approaches can be used in the home
Understand how NVR translates into everyday family life — including practical strategies for de-escalating conflict, maintaining presence, and rebuilding connection without escalating power struggles.
3
Explore how mindfulness and NLP approaches link into NVR
Understand how mindfulness and NLP complement and deepen the NVR approach — and how adult self-awareness, internal regulation, and communication style are central to making NVR work in practice.
4
Review whether this programme is suitable for you or the families you support
Reflect on the specific contexts, family profiles, and presenting difficulties for which NVR is most and least appropriate — so you can make an informed decision about whether and how to apply it in your own practice or family setting.
5
Consider the suitability of NVR for neurodivergent children and teenagers
Explore the specific considerations when applying NVR with neurodivergent children and teens — understanding where adaptations are needed and how to hold the approach in a way that is genuinely affirming rather than inadvertently demand-adding.
