Looking for an Alternative to Behaviour Management? Why BOUNCE Starts Beneath Behaviour

Most behaviour approaches start with what adults can see.

The refusal.
The shouting.
The shutdown.
The running away.
The child who cannot join in, listen, sit still, separate, transition, or cope.

But by the time behaviour becomes visible, the child’s nervous system has often been under strain for some time.

That is why The BOUNCE Approach® starts somewhere different.

It does not begin by asking:

“How do we stop this behaviour?”

It gently shifts the focus to:

“What is this child’s body trying to tell us?”


Behaviour Is Not the Starting Point

When a child is dysregulated — overwhelmed, anxious, angry, withdrawn, or shut down — they are not always choosing their response.

Their nervous system may already be outside its window of tolerance.

That means reasoning, consequences, rewards, explanations, or repeated instructions may not land — because the thinking brain is not fully available.

In that moment, behaviour is not the problem to fix.

It is communication.

A signal that something underneath needs attention.


What Makes The BOUNCE Approach® Different?

The BOUNCE Approach® is a whole-child framework designed to help adults look beneath behaviour and respond in the right order.

It brings together six interconnected areas:

🖤 Body and Nervous System
Is the child overwhelmed, shut down, hyper-alert, or in survival mode?

❤️ Openness to Connection and Trust
Do they feel safe enough to accept support? Do they trust me?

🧡 Understanding Sensory Differences
Is the environment too loud, bright, busy, or unpredictable?

💚 Navigating Emotions
Can they notice and express feelings and internal sensations safely?

💙 Connection to Self and Others
Can they communicate, relate, and feel understood?

💜 Esteem and Identity
Do they feel valued, capable, and accepted as they are?

This sequence matters.

If a child’s body does not feel safe, we cannot expect emotional literacy, social skills, or reflection to follow.

Regulation comes first.


BOUNCE Gives Adults a Shared Language

One of the biggest challenges across homes, schools, and services is inconsistency.

One adult sees behaviour.
Another sees anxiety.
Another sees defiance.
Another sees sensory overload.

BOUNCE creates a shared, simple language:

🟢 Green – calm, connected, ready
🟡 Yellow – fizzy, energised, building
🟠 Orange – wobbly, uncertain, anxious
🔴 Red – angry, defensive, protective
🔵 Blue – sad, low, withdrawn

This allows children to say things like:

“A part of me feels wobbly.”
“My energy battery is low.”

And that changes everything.

From blame…
to understanding.

Where LEGO®-Style Sessions Fit In

The BOUNCE Emotional Literacy Programme® uses LEGO®-style activities to make emotional understanding safe, visual, and accessible. For any age.

Children don’t have to sit and explain difficult feelings directly.

  • externalise them

This is especially important for children who find emotional language overwhelming or hard to access.
