Welcome to Emotional Overwhelm due to Sensory Overload
Understanding how our senses work and how they impact our emotions is crucial, especially for children. Our senses, including the vestibular (balance) and proprioception (body awareness) systems, play a significant role in how we perceive and respond to the world. When children experience over-sensitivity, under-sensitivity, or sensory cravings, it can lead to emotional overwhelm. By assessing a child’s sensory needs, we can tailor strategies to help them manage their responses.
Implementing a sensory diet, which includes a variety of sensory-based activities, can help children meet their sensory needs effectively. These activities might include deep pressure input, swinging, or tactile play, all designed to calm and focus the mind. By exploring and using these sensory-based calming activities, children can learn to regulate their emotions better, reducing feelings of overwhelm and enhancing their overall well-being.
