Welcome to Running Tree of Life Interventions

The Tree of Life (Ncube, 2006, 2017) is an approach, based on Narrative Therapy, which uses the metaphor of a tree for a person’s life to help children and young people tell their story in a creative, non-threatening way.  This is a great little intervention to run in small groups of children that would benefit for understanding their similarities and connections.

Welcome to the Tree of Life Intervention

The Tree of Life (Ncube, 2006, 2017) is an approach, based on Narrative Therapy, which uses the metaphor of a tree for a person’s life to help children and young people tell their story in a creative, non-threatening way.

By using the metaphor of the tree – the child can draw out their life: roots representing their history, culture, background, the trunk their skills and abilities. The leaves become the significant people (and animals) in their lives, the branches hopes and dreams, fruit – things that they have given and received.

They have an opportunity to share their stories with others and reflect on ‘storms’ that affect their lives and explore how they can ‘weather’ these with resources available to them in the form of insects and woodland animals.

This training session outlines the theory behind it, touches on research to validate the effectiveness of the approach, and then how it can be run 1:1 or in small groups.

Learning Objectives

  • To understand the core principles of Tree of Life narrative therapy.
  • To explore the growing research of how this approach has been applied in schools.
  • To identify the symbolic meaning of each element of the tree: roots, trunk, branches, leaves, fruit, and storms.
  • To explore how to use this intervention with children struggling with:
    • A sense of belonging
    • Friendships
    • Identifying strengths
    • Transitions (including moving schools)
    • Loss
  • To explore how a session would be run as a 1:1 over a 6-week + period
  • To explore sessions could be used within small groups over a 6-week + period, or a one-day enrichment activity (especially those with common difficulties – i.e., self-esteem)
