Welcome to the The Subjective Units of Distress (SUD) Scale Assessment Form
The Subjective Units of Distress (SUD) scale is a simple tool used to help children rate how upset or uncomfortable they feel in the moment. Developed by psychiatrist Joseph Wolpe, it’s widely used in therapeutic settings to measure distress during specific situations, thoughts, or memories.
The scale ranges from 0 (no distress) to 10 (extreme distress), and since it’s subjective, it reflects the child’s personal feelings rather than an external standard.
How to Use the SUD Scale:
- Print off the forms – there are 3 versions, based on the type of distress
- Ask the child to scale their feelings about the ‘situation’ or ‘problem’ at the beginning of the intervention session and then at the end
The feedback from this can help the facilitator evaluate the impact of their interventions and provides insights into the child’s emotional needs.
Benefits
- User-Friendly: The scale is easy to understand and quick to use, even for younger children.
- Versatile: It can be adapted to various settings and situations, helping to monitor distress in a flexible way.
- Tracking Progress: Regular use of the SUD scale allows you to see how a child’s emotional response changes over time, aiding in the assessment of intervention effectiveness.
