Welcome to the Reflection Pack
Mountfield Heath School introduced the Reflection Pack to the pupils in September 2020 and have updated it in September 2021. To us, the idea of teaching reflective practice seemed a naturalistic way of children learning and embedding skills that will be used throughout their lives. Reflection and repair are far more useful tools than the traditional consequence system, which is often detached from the behaviour itself. For example, helping to repair a torn display and repairing damage is more powerful than missing a playtime as it is connected to the behaviour.
The children at Mountfield Heath respond positively to the Reflection Pack. Every pack is individualised to their needs, and they have their own voice as to what goes in their ‘Toolbox of
Strategies’. They understand the process and we are seeing this impacting on how they respond to others and their environment. We are proud of our pack and how our pupils respond to it. We are so pleased to work with the Child Therapy Service and to have the opportunity to share this with you.
Introduction to the Pack
The reflection pack is a debrief document which supports restorative practice providing a learning opportunity for both the child and staff supporting them.
This is a document for the child. They should be involved in the creation of this and it should be personalised to support their behaviours and emotional needs. The idea of this reflection pack is to educate the child in life long coping and repair strategies to allow them to be a valued member of their community.
Behaviour is a form of communication. Through this reflection pack the child is being educated in using positive strategies to communicate their emotions rather than engaging in unsafe, harmful or unkind behaviours.
Implementation of the Reflection Pack
When a child escalates to crisis point and is displaying behaviours of concern, staff support the child by appropriately using low arousal techniques to inform them how their behaviour is unsafe,
harmful or unkind. Staff provide a warning (verbally and through a visual card), an opportunity to ‘opt out’ and turn their behaviours around to make good choices. If a child is unable to turn their behaviour around, staff issue a repair card. A repair card is issued for unsafe behaviours in which harm to self, others or property has taken place or when relationships have been fractured through unkind actions.
