Welcome to the BOUNCE Scale

Did you know that you can map out your own nervous system? This revelation is exactly what Dr. Porges did with the Polyvagal Theory! By creating this theory, he aimed to help us understand how to shift between the states of our nervous system. This understanding allows us to feel more mindful, grounded, and happy throughout the day. Moreover, the more we practice shifting and regulating back to calm, the more resilient we become.

Understanding and managing emotions can be challenging for children, especially those who struggle to verbalise their feelings. However, the Bounce Emotional Scale offers a visual and effective solution. By providing these children with a way to visually represent their internal states, the scale breaks down these states into the Polyvagal-informed States of:

  • Calm
  • Fizzy
  • Wobbly
  • Angry
  • Sad

This pack contains:

  • Number Strips (horizontal and vertical)
  • Incremental Number Strips
  • Word Strips (horizontal and vertical)
  • Bounce Character Strips (horizontal and vertical)
  • Fans – Words, Numbers, and Characters
  • Bounce Character Flash Cards/Poster

The Positive Impact of Using the Bounce Emotional Scale for Children

The resource pack aims to provide children who struggle with verbalizing their emotions with a visual representation of their internal states. Drawing on the Polyvagal Theory by Dr. Porges, it offers tools like Number Strips, Word Strips, fun Bounce Character Strips, Fans, and Flash Cards. These resources help enhance emotional awareness, facilitate non-verbal emotional expression, support emotional regulation, offer consistent visual cues, encourage mindfulness and grounding, and build resilience.

Resource Pack Ideas

  • Morning Check-in – Use the Number Strips or Word Strips during morning routines to help children identify their current emotional state.
  • Emotion Regulation Activities – Implement Bounce Character Strips in mindfulness exercises, guiding children through different characters to promote calming techniques.
  • Visual Emotion Charts – Create a wall chart with Bounce Character Flash Cards/Poster for children to move their name or picture to the character that best represents their current feeling.
  • Incremental Progress Tracking – Use Incremental Number Strips to help children track their progress in shifting from a heightened state (e.g., Angry) to a calmer state (e.g., Calm).
  • Story Time Integration – Incorporate Bounce Character Flash Cards into storytelling, asking children to identify the emotions of characters in the story and relate them to their own experiences.
  • Emotion Journals – Encourage children to keep an emotion journal where they paste Word Strips or draw Bounce Characters representing how they felt throughout the day.
  • Calming Kits – Include Fans with Words, Numbers, and Characters in individual calm down kits for children to use when they need to self-regulate.
  • Group Discussions – Facilitate group discussions using Word Strips or Character Strips, encouraging children to share and discuss their emotions in a supportive environment.
  • Role-playing Games – Use the Bounce Character Flash Cards for role-playing activities where children act out different scenarios and practice responding to various emotional states.
