Welcome to an IFS Informed Approach to the Window of Tolerance
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic approach that views the mind as composed of multiple sub-personalities or ‘parts’, each with its unique perspective and qualities. Integrating IFS with the Window of Tolerance can offer a deeper understanding for children, helping them manage their emotions effectively.
Practical Application could include:
Identifying Parts
- Optimal Arousal State: If a child is in this state, they can access their ‘Self,’ a core state of calm, curiosity, and compassion. This is an ideal time to explore and understand the different parts of themselves. A perfect state for interventions to be run. 🔍
- Hyper-arousal State: If a child is in this state, identify the parts that are activated (e.g., an anxious protective part). These parts often hold intense emotions and can benefit from being acknowledged and understood. If the child struggles to connect, voice, or understand it – please consider our Sand Tray Interventions
- Hypo-arousal State: If a child is in this state, identify parts that might be shutting down or withdrawing to protect the child from overwhelming feelings. Again, please consider the interventions, so that you have a toolkit of approaches to support those strong protective parts.

Resource Pack Ideas
- Emotion Charts: Design charts where children can map out their emotions throughout the day. Include sections for identifying optimal arousal, hyper-arousal, and hypo-arousal states, allowing them to visualise and track their emotional fluctuations.
- Role-Playing Cards: Create cards with scenarios that trigger different emotional responses (e.g., a challenging school work, social event, meeting new friends). Have children select cards and role-play how their “parts” would react in each situation. Link this to the visual aid.
- Personalised Calm/Soothing Kits: Help children create personalized soothing kits with tactile objects (e.g., stress balls, calming stones) and visual reminders (e.g., affirmations, calming images) that correspond to each part’s needs.
- Expanding Tolerance: Explore practical ideas for expanding the window and flow, based on the information from the parts.
