Our Whole Child Approach©

We offer evidence-based therapeutic intervention tools that target the root causes of dysregulation while addressing and enhancing the child’s developmental needs.

Our approach is centered around a comprehensive Whole Child framework, ensuring we cover crucial areas such as attachment, sensory processing, emotional regulation, interpersonal connections, and self-awareness through various training opportunities provided throughout the year.

By nurturing each of these aspects, we facilitate overall child development, laying a solid foundation for the growth of inner strength, confidence, and self-esteem.

Attachment

Meeting a child’s attachment needs is paramount, particularly when addressing emotional struggles. By prioritising secure attachments, professionals create a foundation of trust and safety, essential for emotional healing and growth.

Addressing attachment needs fosters the capacity for challenges/states of activation, enhances emotional regulation, and forms the cornerstone of effective intervention strategies, ultimately leading to positive outcomes for the child’s emotional well-being.

Sensory/Somatic

After establishing secure attachments, addressing a child’s sensory needs becomes crucial in supporting their emotional well-being.

Sensory regulation techniques provide a calming and comforting environment, allowing the child to better regulate their emotions and navigate challenging/activating situations.

By recognising and accommodating sensory preferences and sensitivities professionals can create a supportive atmosphere that enhances the capacity for challenges/states of activation and fosters positive emotional growth in children facing emotional struggles.

Emotions

Once attachment and sensory needs are addressed, attending to a child’s emotional needs becomes vital in supporting their overall well-being. However, as evident throughout these stages, emotions are intertwined with attachment and sensory regulation. If a child struggles to form healthy attachments and trust others, they are likely to experience emotional dysregulation. Similarly, if their nervous system is porous and sensitive to stimuli, it may lead to emotional dysregulation as well.

Essentially, the nervous system responds to stimuli, manifesting behaviours and emotions to ensure the child’s safety. Providing emotional support and validation helps children navigate their feelings, build capacity for challenges, and develop healthy coping strategies.

By creating a safe and nurturing environment that acknowledges and validates their emotions, professionals empower children to thrive emotionally, laying the groundwork for long-term emotional health.

Connection

Once attachment, sensory, and emotional needs are addressed, fostering social connections becomes paramount in supporting a child’s emotional well-being.

Social connections provide opportunities for validation, support, and belonging.

By nurturing positive relationships and facilitating peer interactions, professionals create a supportive environment where children can thrive.

We support this area by offering the following provision

Self

After addressing the child’s attachment needs, sensory differences, emotional capacity, and social connections, the focus shifts to the development of self.

In this phase, the child is empowered to explore their identity, strengths, and interests, fostering a sense of autonomy and self-awareness. By providing opportunities for self-expression, self-discovery, and growth, professionals guide children towards developing a strong sense of self, laying the groundwork for confidence, independence, and fulfilment in their lives.

Our Bounce Scale©

Our resources and training materials feature the Bounce Scale©, a Polyvagal Focused Framework aimed at assisting children in understanding and managing their emotional states by examining their nervous system responses.

This framework forms the cornerstone of the Whole Child Approach, seamlessly integrated throughout, offering a tangible representation of emotional states rooted in nervous system reactions, which helps to alleviate blame and shame often associated with emotional dysregulation while empowering children to grasp their emotional needs.

The scale functions as a ladder, illustrating the hierarchy of emotions from calm to sad. Our objective with this approach is to educate children on the factors influencing their nervous system’s response, thereby enabling them, with our support, to take charge of their emotional states.

Once they can identify when their nervous system is activated by internal or external events, they can employ known strategies to regulate it. Numerous strategies are available throughout this site, to induce the calm state, mediated by the parasympathetic system.

Our overarching goal is to equip children with this knowledge so they can effectively utilise these strategies throughout their lives.
